It was founded around 1250 B.C.

The site was occupied until the arrival of the conquerors in 1521. The peak was during the Late Postclassic period (1250-1325 A.D.).

It was an enclosed and fortified city and was the capital of the Chichimecs until it was moved to Texcoco.

Must see Buildings

It is believed by some scholars that the Great Temple of Tenochtitlán was modeled after the great temple of Tenayuca. The large pyramid has a stepped basement formed by 4 bodies of vertical walls 2 meters high each. Some steps are ornamented with rows of serpents surrounding all three sides of the base, forming a coatepantli (serpent wall) inspired by the one in Tula.

In the platform of the Coatepantli or Wall of Snakes, 140 rattlesnakes are represented with a spiral-like crest in their heads, they are identified as xiuhcoatls, or fire serpents, the weapon of Huitzilopochtli. The division of the stairway into two, indicates that at the top of the pyramid there were two temples as in Tenochtitlan, one dedicated to Tláloc and the other to Huitzilopochtli.

It has a site museum with the story of the first city of Chichimecas in the Valley of Mexico. It has a permanent exhibition with a collection of pieces recovered on the site such as: Teotihuacan vessels, “cajetes” (an unglazed clay pot used in cooking), glasses, and sculptures, among other pieces.

There is also an audiovisual room that projects daily the documentary video of the history of Tenayuca.
