It is located in the middle of the Lacandon Jungle.
Its peak was during the Classic era (600-800). It was a political, administrative and ritual center.
Must see Buildings
Bonampak has a central square surrounded by various religious, administrative and residential buildings, none of them is very tall.
Inside the plaza there is a stele and there are other steles located in the stairs of the Acropolis, all of them were beautifully carved.
However, this archeological site is famous for its mural paintings depicting scenes of tribute payment, war and capturing prisoners for their sacrifice.
These murals are located in Temple I or Temple of Murals, which is divided into three rooms and occupy the entire walls.
These paintings are the best preserved of the Mayan Classic and although there are several characters that are repeated all are represented with different clothes and the decorations are different, this gives us a clear idea of the richness of the clothing of the Mayan nobility.
The turquoise, yellows and rust colors are bright and no other painting or mural from that time gives as much information.
In the Grand Plaza you can see the stela that shows Chaan Muan II dressed in great luxury celebrating his fifth year of government.
