Its name is related to imaginary beings that inhabited in the streams known as chanos.
The site had its peak between 1100 and 1400 A.D. Due to its extension, the pre-Hispanic settlement is likely to be the largest in the state.
There are ceremonial spaces, squares, central altars and ball games. It is believed that its inhabitants were related to the culture of Tula.

El Chanal has six plazas or important ceremonial centers:
The Plaza de los Altares (Altars) where two altars are located.
The Ball Game located south of the Plaza del Tiempo.
The Plaza del Día y de la Noche (Day and the Night), is a large open space of 60 by 80 meters.
The Plaza del Tiempo, features the most impressive buildings on the site: structures 1 and 3.
The Plaza del Agua (Water) is formed by a series of low platforms with interior courtyards, corridors and open plazas.
The Plaza del Altar redondo (Round Altar) dominates the Altar and Time Plazas.

It is located 6 km north of the City of Colima.
