It is located next to a blue lake called the Muyil Lagoon.

It was an important coastal city with an impressive architecture related to the Guatemalan Petén. This site played a very important role in the trade between the peninsular coast and the Gulf of Mexico.

Due to its strategic location, towards the Early Postclassic period (1000 – 1200 AD), it maintained some contacts, with Chichén Itzá first, and with Mayapán later.
