It is believed that its name means "Place of Strange Structure of Three Towers."
The first evidences of human occupation on the site date from the year 400 BC, within the period known as Late Preclassic; its peak, mainly reflected in its architecture, seems to have been during the Late Classic (600-800 AD), and its decline occurred towards the Early Postclassic, in about 1200 A.D.
Must see Buildings
It is composed of approximately 17 architectural groups and numerous residential platforms. In some of its temples you can see monstrous snake jaws and its decoration is associated with the Rio Bec style.
Xpuhil
Tres Torres (Building of the Three Towers)
It is located within Set I, stands over a rounded-corner platform and is the only case of a Rio Bec style building with 3 towers.
Grupo II (Group II)
The group extends to the south of the first and is known for the structure called Los Pájaros (the birds), it was probably a temple and as preserved some masks in good condition.
Grupo III (Group III)
You can see a dozen structures that appear to be for residential use, and two squares.
Templo de la Crestería (Temple)
It is other important buildings of this area. It has 19 rooms and the name derives from its façade with an upper finish or crest where vestiges of stylized masks can be seen.
Location
It is located 304 km southwest of the city of Campeche on Federal Highway No. 186 that goes from Escárcega to Chetumal. It is located 9 km from the town of the same name.
