The archaeological remains are part of the ceremonial center built by the Purépecha culture.
It was built in the Early Postclassic to Late Postclassic period (1450-1521).
It was one of the most important cities of Lake Pátzcuaro when the Spaniards arrived, with a population of approximately 30,000 people.
Must see Buildings
The site is distributed on large terraces and large platforms that are located on the slopes of the Yarahuato and Tariaque hills.
Currently, you can see the Great Platform where there are five yácatas (semi-circular pyramids), one of the most voluminous structures in all Mesoamerica. In addition, is the Structure B or Palace with a series of rooms distributed around a courtyard that must have once had columns to hold up the roof of a possible corridor.
In the surroundings there are vestiges of some plazas and a residential area.
Tzintzuntzan
Tzintzuntzan Site Museum
It has a Site Museum with a display of various pieces of pottery, as well as axes, bells and ornaments made by artists from the Tarascan culture.
According to the new discoveries, the exhibition of this museum is being updated and enriched.

It is located on the northeastern shore of Lake Pátzcuaro, in the municipality of Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán.
