It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Sonora.
In La Pintada there are two archaeological components. The first, inside the canyon where cave paintings and rock engravings are found; and the second is outside, on the alluvial plain of the canyon, where vestiges of various seasonal camps are scattered in an extensive area, where pieces of pottery, stone tools, seashell and grinding devices have been found.
In the canyon, the area concentrates more than 2000 cave paintings that according to scholars are related to the so-called "hunting magic" or "sympathetic" and fertility rites.
The cave art of "La Pintada" includes: pregnant females or male animals following females; there are many representations of donkeys and deer that should have been their main prey. All these figures of animals and humans are artistically drawn in yellow, black, ocher, orange or white, mostly mineral colors, consisting of iron oxides and limestone.
This area is considered a cultural heritage because of the confluence of various ethnic groups.
