The name means "Ravine or Canyon formed by Water".

The name clearly indicates the most notable feature of the site, and is unique in the Mayan area, a dry moat surrounds the main architectural groups.

The function of the pit was multiple, since it was designed to delimit the civic-ceremonial area, and at the same time it was also a defensive element.

Evidence of human occupation in Becán goes back to 600 B.C.; however, its peak occurred between 600 and 1000 A.D. Most of the structures are dated around the year 100 A.D.

Becán is considered the capital of the Río Bec region during the Classic period. The Rio Bec architectural style is characterized by main buildings with a semi-quadrangular plan with numerous rooms on a platform. In addition, the decoration of the buildings consists of masks on their main facades.
