It is an archaeological zone surrounded by a beautiful natural environment.
This site lies in a beautiful natural setting in the east of the state of Morelos, on the slopes of two hills known as Cerro Delgado and Cerro Ancho with a panoramic view of the valley bellow. Chalcatzingo was occupied from 3000 B.C. until 400 B.C., and during the years 700 to 500 B.C. reached its heyday.
Human occupation began in prehistoric times and there have been discovered some cave paintings in the rocky shelters of Cerro Delgado.
Later the site became a very important civic-ceremonial center and its cultural relics are closely linked to interaction with the Olmec culture between the Gulf coast and the center of Mexico.
Chalcatzingo is the only archeological site found in the Mexican central plateau with an important architectural achivements, with outstanding carved relief works.
