In Burgos, Tamaulipas, in the vicinity of the Sierra de San Carlos, a series of cave paintings have been discovered.

These paintings portray various scenes of at least three groups of hunters and gatherers that inhabited the northern part of the country during pre-Hispanic era.

The paintings are made with organic and mineral pigments and anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, astronomical and abstract motifs.

Scholars have not yet established the age of the paintings, however, this is a confirmation that this entire area was populated many years before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors.
