This extensive site was founded by the Purépechas on an artificially leveled plateau on the eastern shore of Lake Pátzcuaro.
There have been importat findings in this site like monumental sculptures, including a Chac-Mool (characteristic element of Toltec culture).
This site was occupied from the year 900 A.D. until the arrival of the Spanish conquerors in 1530. It is distinguished by its architectural advances such as the Huatziri (elevated roads served to communicate the buildings inside the city). It is also the largest settlement around Lake Pátzcuaro.
Must see Buildings
This area was used as an astronomical observatory and ceremonial center until the arrival of the conquerors.
The most notorious structures are the temples dedicated to "Curicaveri" and "Xaratanga".
It was the first capital of the Purépecha Empire and was one of the antagonistic groups of the Aztecs upon the arrival of the Spaniards.
