This area has two periods of occupation.

 

The oldest dates back to the beginning of the Christian era and the second belongs to the Late Classic between 600 and 900 AD.

It is an ancient site of the Mayan culture and is located in the municipality of Tenosique. Its name derives from the nearby San Claudio lagoon.

The area extends for 70 ha where 94 stone constructions have been found and 35 funeral burials have been identified.

San Claudio

Group 1

There are two pyramidal bases with a height of 8 to 12 meters delimiting a rectangular square and several platforms as well as terraces and patios on different levels.

Group 2

It is located on the north side of the San Claudio Lagoon and the six explored structures are scattered on the gentle slope of the hill. Structure 6 stands out with a platform and a small shrine.

Group 3

It is formed by 23 structures, and the most notorious is the ball game.

Group 4

It is separated from the previous one by a small creek and is located at the top of the hill. It is made up of 24 structures among which there are several mounds.

Group 5

It is the one located in the highest part of the hill, two km from the San Claudio Lagoon. It has a terrace and eleven platforms.

Structure 12

Perhaps the most outstanding structure of this site is the Astronomical Observatory also known as Structure 12. It is a basement 2.5 meters high and its orientation coincides with the orientation of the solstices.

Location

It is located approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes from Villahermosa. To get from Villahermosa, take federal highway 186 and at km 140 there is a junction with federal highway 203 where you take the deviation to Tenosique de Pino Suárez, there you take the international highway Tenosique-El Ceibo and at km 38 you will find the archaeological zone.
