Tututepec was part of the Mixtec empire and reached its maximum splendor at the beginning of the Post-Classic (11th century).

During the ruling of "8 Tiger Claw Deer" one of the most famous, popular and powerful Mixtec monarchs.

In the center of the town there are some pre-Hispanic sculptures like two monoliths with zoomorphic figures, a snake carved in basaltic stone and the sculpture of a female character that bears great resemblance to the Tula atlantes.

In the community of Tututepec, many of the pieces found in the archaeological zone are exhibited. A monolith representing the Goddess of the Moon is one of most notorious.

Location

The archeological zone is located west of Puerto Escondido, 81 kilometers away by Federal Highway No. 200.
