The pyramid was built on top of a mountain in the spectacular Tepoztlan sierra. The area where the pyramid was erected is rocky in nature and was artificially molded and cut.

This site was occupied in the Early Classic to the Late Postclassic (1200-1521). It is said that in pre-Hispanic times pilgrimages arrived from Chiapas and Guatemala, to pay tribute to the Tepozteco Tepuztécatl.

Must see Buildings

To visit the pyramid you have to climb to the top of the hill, starting in the place known as Axihtla, in the "Baptistry Cross", which is a monument formed by a stone sphere, with a cross on its top and marking the place where Tepoztécatl was baptized as a sign of his conversion to Christianity. In the rainy season the water runs along the entire road, and the landscape turns green everywhere.

During the ascent, you can see, for example, the air corridors, which are found at the base of the "Ehecatépetl" hill or wind hill. Higher up, you can see "Las Tres Marías", which are three figures formed in the rock. To get there, there is a rock approximately 30 meters high, which some know as "The Twins" or also "The Doll", this depending on the angle from which it is observed.

The ruins at the top of the hill were considered one of the most sacred areas by the ancient Tepoztecs. The temple consists of two rooms that are bordered by two meter wide walls. In the lower part of the pyramid there are two plaques; one has the hieroglyph of king Ahuitzotl, indicating a date of 1500 A.C. and the other has the date 10 Tochtli (rabbit) that corresponds to the final years of Ahuitzotl’s reign. In this building there is a glyph with the name of Ahuízotl, the "man-god", considered to be the bearer of the god’s essence, his manifestation on the human plane.
