The old name was Zama, which means "Dawn" and is one of the most beautiful archaeological treasures in Mexico.

A powerfull walled city inhabited between 564 to 1550 A.D, that reached its peak from the Early Classic to the Late Postclassic (1250-1550 A.D).

Tulum was the primary location for the Maya’s extensive trade network and is the best and most well-known example of the eastern coast style and one of the few Mayan cities that was inhabited when the Spaniards arrived in the 16th century.

Must see Buildings

More than 60 very well preserved structures can be admired within the site surrounded by three 5 meter thick perimeter walls.

The decoration of the buildings of the site includes niches on the door lintels, which almost always have the stucco representation of a descending god. There are also amazing mural painting representing the ancient Maya cosmogony.

Tulum

El Castillo (The Castle)

The site is dominated by The Castle, is the tallest building and the most famous, stands forefront on the bluff, commanding a view of the Caribbean and the coast for miles; it was used as an ancient lighthouse to help the Mayan sailors to avoid the dangers of the world’s second longest coral reef. The lintels of its upper rooms are beautifully carved with the plumed serpent motif.

Templo del Dios Descendente (Temple of the Descending God)

It has a figure sculpted with its head pointing down in its façade, symbolizing the descending god, associated with the setting of the sun; this figure appears repeatedly along various friezes. In the interior there are vestiges of colorful paintings.

Templo de la Serie Inicial (Temple of the Initial Series)

It has a wide outer stairway and bears several stucco figures. In the interior is Tulum's oldest inscription was found, dating from A. D. 564, before the site was built.

Templo de los Frescos (Temple of the Frescos)

It has preserved some murals, even though they are significantly affected by time and the elements. Some of the paintings seem to have influence of the Mixtec culture and represent a great number of mythological serpents, probably related to Kukulcan. This building was also used as an observatory.

Casa de las Columnas (House of the Columns)

It is a palace-like structure maybe the most complex building at the site. It has four rooms and six columns support the roof of the main room and top sanctuary.

Templo del Dios del Viento (Temple of the God of the Wind)

It is located high on the cliff and has a round base. On the west wall there are two watchtowers that hold religious altars.

Other important structures

There are some other structures that worth a visit like the House of Chultún, the House of Halach Uinic or Great Lord with some carvings and paintings, and the House of the Cenote with a sacbé leading to a cenote.

It is located within the Tulum National Park almost two hours from Cancun and less than an hour from Playa del Carmen.

Monday to Sunday from 8:00 to 17:00 hrs.

TIP

Below the castle is the main beach. It is small but it is staggeringly beautiful. You will access it via a series of steps heading down from the cliffs to the sand.
