In the Lagunera Region there is an extensive corridor with mortuary caves discovered in the 19th century.
Mortuary caves are also registered in Ocampo, San Pedro de las Colonias, Cuatrociénegas and Francisco I. Madero.
However, the most important mortuary cave in northern Mexico is the Candelaria Cave, located in the Valle de las Delicias, which constitutes the northern limit of the Lagunera Region.
Other important caves are: Cueva de la Paila, Cueva del Coyote, La Chuparrosa, Cueva Espantosa and Cueva de la Candelaria where there are clear vestiges of a complex human activity with burial rites.
There have been found a number of ancient ítems in these caves, such as carved lithic artifacts, fiber sandals, pumpkin ligaments and shell ornaments, among others.
Location
They are located in the Sierra La Candelaria, on the north-eastern slope.
