A large and prosperous Mayan city that was inhabited from 300 B.C until 1546.
Although its heyuday occurred during the Late Preclassic to the Late Postclassic (300 – 250 B.C) when the site had a dominant role over a small territory.
It is located in the lower Peten lakes area, a very strategic place, surrounded by the Om Lagoon and with an abundance of natural resources, which allowed it to become an important producer and exporter of several ítems. The location also aid in the defense of this urban centre some.
The region is characterized by the Río Bec architectural style, and the massive structures were built in high parts, to protect them from hurricanes and floods.

One of the most important building is the temple of Nohoch Balam where some unique masks were found, reminiscent of the Olmec colossal heads. The great stucco masks bear helments with sloped bar son both sides of the cheeks. These peculiar masks used to be on the side of the pyramid and were painted in red.
The largest masks measure more than 10 meters long by 3.50 meters tall.
In the area some monolithic steles over a meter high have been found, some of them under the waters of the Om Lagoon.
The center also has an enormous acropolis, the largest in the entire Mayan area, and has several sacbes.
