This site is the most important archaeological zone of the coast of Chiapas.
It belongs to the Mixe-Zoque culture and is considered a link between the Olmec and Mayan cultures.
It was the ceremonial, religious and political center of Soconusco for almost a thousand years, although it had several uses over time, since the first settlement dates from the Preclassic period and was occupied until the Late Postclassic period, that is from 1500 B.C. to the year 1200 A.D.
The place has evidence mize-zoque and maya, although there are also vestiges that indicate the presence of Mexicans who visited the region in order to collect tribute.
Must see Buildings
The site had more than 160 buildings including pyramids and platforms of up to 22 meters high. There are several groups: A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H and 252 stone monuments, most of them are sculpted and 89 are stelae carved with religious scenes from the Popol Vuh, an important book in Mayan cosmology.
On the stelae carved in bas-relief, the underworld, the earthly plane and the celestial plane can be identified; In each one you can see fantastic figures such as: bird-men, dragons, gods coming out of the mouth of a snake or a jaguar and men worshiping the Gods, among other representations. The most famous stela is No. 5, or of the Tree of Life, which displays a supreme entity constructing the Universe and its relationship with the earth, fire, and water.
