Its name means “the place of the corn stalks.”
The site dates from approximately 100 A.D. and grew steadily until around 1100 A.D..
Must see Buildings
The site clearly shows the style of the Chenes and was built on an artificial elevation that reaches about 30 meters high.
The ceremonial center is a set of buildings distributed in three squares: The Eastern Palace, The Main Palace or Structure II and Structure III. Structure 2 is divided into three clearly defined volumes, both horizontally and vertically, with the central section prominent not only because of its roofcomb and its opulently ornamented entrance, but also because of its more elevated position and the noticeable recess that accentuates the volume of the wings in respect to it.
The Central Group consists of two plazas, but only the northern one has been excavated. This is where the most important monument of the site was found, a frieze made of polychrome modeled stucco, with a height of 1.75 m and a length of 16.80 m.
At Santa Rosa, the jungle vegetation is so dense that you can get lost if you don’t go along the open paths. And that is also the reason why not much is yet known about the monumental center of Santa Rosa Xtampak.
