The site is located northwest of Guanajuato.

It is a site of the Epiclassic (600 to 900 AD) and it seems that the inhabitants had close contact with the “Tunal Grande” region in San Luis Potosí.

Must see Buildings

The site is named after the Coporo hill and it was built on the top of the mountain at 156 meter high, but there are also some smaller settlements on the slopes.

In the lower part, the Llano complex is located with public and residential areas. On the hillside there are tow groups, the “Gotas” and “Montes”, with civic spaces.

There are some other groups like The “Caracol”, a residential area, and a civic plaza on an adjoining hill know as the “Pilar”.

The “Puerto del Aire”, has a captivated landscape and a cobble road that was used for the pilgrams to get to the top of the hill to the ceremonial area. At the top there is an area probably reserved for rulers and priests, remains some structures like Plaza 1 and 2, the Easter platform with 20 columns probably related with the calendar, the Northern platform with three structures one known as the Palace, and the southern and western platforms.

The Cóporo is today a natural reserve and is one of the sites in Mexico with 16 different species of nopales (pads of the nopal cactus), considered one of the places with great cacti diversity.
