The name means in Mayan "The House of the Serpent Mouth".
It is distinguished by the elegance and decorative richness of its buildings.
This community was an important city in the Rio Bec region, which reached its peak between 550 and 700 AD. The city remained occupied until the Terminal Classic and Postclassic periods (800-1100 AD).
Must see Buildings
It has an elaborate architecture mixing two Mayan styles Chenes and Río Bec.
The settlement is formed by five architectural groups. There are seven structures, but the most notorious is the Structure II richly decorated with an enormous figurehead that represents Itzamná, the god of creation, it is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the region.
Other important structures are: the Structure XI with a small palace of 12 rooms; the Structure XX a two-level building with 15 rooms; and the East Palace, a long building.
