It is located on the banks of the San Pedro Mártir River. The settlement had its origin during the Preclassic period around the year 1000 B.C. and began its decline around the year 400 B.C. La Venta became the dominant Olmec ceremonial center by 800 B.C.

This site belongs to the cities of the Usumacinta basin and was part of an important commercial axis together with Moral Reforma and San Claudio.
