The original name was Pakbul.
According to the hieroglyphs found in the place and this site has an important contribution in Mayan history.
Several inscriptions found in Pomona, as it is known today, tell the relations with other important Mayan fiefdoms of the period, such as Palenque.
Pomoná and most of the cities in the Usumacinta Basin reached their peak in the Late Classic (600 to 900 A.D.), in this large area that includes part of the current states of Chiapas and Tabasco.
Must see Buildings
Pomona is a dispersed settlement occupies a 470-acre strip of a fertile, hilly region in the left bank of the Usumacinta River. The six important architectural complexes were built above the flood level and there are residential areas along the slopes of the hill.
Only one of the six architectural groups have been explore, the one located in the north end of Group I. There is a rectangular-based plaza surrounded by 13 buildings. In the center of the plaza is a low altar and the most notorious structure is the Temple IV with beautifully carved panels representing the god Kin, the sun.
Other relevant finding was the "tombstone of the scribe," a stela and a bust representing two unidentified dignitaries, a mask of the sun-jaguar god of the underworld, the carved tablets of Building 4, the figure of an old man with a beard and hat and other objects such as the curious flint knives. All these items are currently on display in the Pomoná Site Museum.

This museum was built with the same techniques of a traditional Tabascan house, with an inner patio covered by a Marseilles tiled hip roof. The exhibit include various pieces of ceramics, metates, green stone axes, flint knives and various boards with hieroglyphic inscriptions, among many other objects.
Location
It can be reached by highway 186 that goes from the Villahermosa to Escárcega; 20 km from Playas de Catazajá, turn off to the right, taking the state road that passes through Emiliano Zapata and continue to Tenosique; on 45 km turn to the left to the deviation to the archaeological zone.
