Yagul was a leading Central Valleys settlement after the decline of Monte Albán, between AD 750 and 950.
Later after a short abandonment, Yagul regains its importance and become a city-state, in the valley of Oaxaca, until shortly before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors.
This important pre-Hispanic center has among its monuments the largest ball game in the Oaxaca region and the second in Mesoamerica.
Must see Buildings
From the tenth century onwards, the inhabitants of the town of Yagul constructed a series of artificial platforms on one of the rocky massifs that dominate the valley, and is divided into three areas:
The Fortaleza (Fortress), it’s well worth climbing the rocky hill towering above Yagul, it is protected by natural and artificial walls.
The second is the common room area.
And the third is the Ceremonial Center, a large platform composed of a group of buildings. The buildings that make up this space are: the Patio de la Tumba Triple (Patio of the Triple Tomb), consisting of a central courtyard and four rooms and a tomb with three burial chambers; the ball game; the Council Hall, a rectangular building divided into two sections by circular columns; the Palacio de los Seis Patios (Palace of the Six Patios), a building composed of an artificial platform with six courtyards surrounded by rooms and above it, was probably the leader’s residence; and the Calle de las grecas (Street of the Frets), the walls have remains of boards, decorated with frets similar to those of Mitla.
