It has its first occupation in the Middle Preclassic period.

The name comes from Maya, meaning “Jaguar’s Temple”, and probably had its peak between 500 and 650 AD, in the Classic period.

The diverse constructions rise among the lush jungle vegetation, so while visiting you can enjoy and learn more about this natural environment.

Must see Buildings

There are three main architectural groups in this site: the South, the Central and the North Group. Only the first two have been excavated.

The South Group is formed by 13 structures of different sizes with different functions. They are distributed in four civic-ceremonial plazas.

The Central Group consists of two plazas, but only the northern one has been excavated. This is where the most important monument of the site was found, a frieze made of polychrome modeled stucco, with a height of 1.75 m and a length of 16.80 m.

At Santa Rosa, the jungle vegetation is so dense that you can get lost if you don’t go along the open paths. And that is also the reason why not much is yet known about the monumental center of Santa Rosa Xtampak.
