The ceremonial center was built around 750 B.C on top of an extinct volcano South to Tlaxcala Valley.
This site is above the valley in a strategic position, with a panoramic view of a wide geographical area.
Xochitecatl was a short-lived ceremonial center for the Olmeca and Xicalanca people and became a regional capital whose influence extended along the north-central area of the Tlaxcala Valley, as well as on the west side of the Nativitas-Atlachino-Xochitécatl block.
The center remained abandoned for five centuries, and then it was reoccupied. This second occupation corresponds to the Epiclassic period and the Olmecas-Xicalancas culture, coming from the coast.

Must see Buildings
The social complexity is very evident due to its urban life with well-differentiated activities, which implies the presence of specialists in various tasks, as you can see in the knife workshop in the Serpent Building and the very elaborated sculptures showing a specific knowledge in production processes.
The most important monuments are located on top of the hill: the Pyramid of the Flowers with a rectangular plant that measures 144 meters, one of the largest structures in Mesoamerica; the Pyramid of the Snake, named this way for the sculpture with a snake's head found in here; The Pyramid of the Spiral, a circular building located at the west end of the site, dedicated to Ehécatl, god of the wind.
Among the most important archaeological materials were shell, copper and bone ornaments, as well as its pottery called Xochitécatl, which is distinguished by its excellent polychromy, shape and decoration.
