Its name means "Water Entry", in clear allusion to its geographical characteristics.

It was one of the main commercial ports on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, especially in its peak period that goes from the Middle Preclassic to the Late Postclassic (250-600 A.D).

Although after the year 600 there was a declined, there was a recovery in the year 1200 and several colorful structures were built along with a wall.

Must see Buildings

There are five groups in the site: The Palace, the oldest and largest; The Pilasters; Lothtop; Los Pájaros (The Birds), with well-preserved mural paintings representing birds of the region; and Jaguar that is located next to a cenote.

It is located 113 km from Cancun, 48 km from Playa del Carmen and 14 km north of Tulum.
