Cultural Heritage registered in 2010 on the World Heritage List by UNESCO.
They are located in the Tlacolula Valley and consist in 115 prehistoric caves and rock shelters with cave paintings and human vestiges of more than 12,000 years old. They are distributed in an area of 5,000 hectares at an altitude that varies between 1,500 and 1,600 meters above sea level.
These caves were used as a kind of refuge for groups of hunter-gatherers and the good state of conservation of the remains that have been found in these caves is amazing.
Some of the most notorious are:
Caballito Blanco (Little Withe Horse)
The cave is located on the rocky outcrops at the entrance to the site.
Guilá Naquitz
Where 10,000 year-old seeds have been found, this cave provided extraordinarily well preserved botanical evidence of bottle gourds, beans and squash, among others. These seeds are the earliest remains of domesticated plants discovered in the American continent, and the transition from nomadic to sedentary life.
Prehistoric Caves of Yagul and Mitla
Cueva Blanca and Gheo Shih
These caves provided evidence of Pleistocene animals along with stone tools. These findings reveal the lifestyles and livelihoods of the communities that inhabited this region of Oaxaca millennia ago.
Other important caves
The Duvil-Yasip, Yagul, El Fuerte, Corral de Piedra, Los Compadres and the Fortress of Mitla.
Location
They are located in the Tlacolula Valley, 35 kilometers east of the city of Oaxaca.
