Dating back to the Early Post-Classic Period (900-1250 D.C.).
It is the only settlement known from the matlazinca culture.
Must see Buildings
The ruins extend over several kilometers and have a series of intercommunicated patios, with rooms on several levels.
There is also a ball game and a skull platform. One of its most interesting buildings is the so-called "Temple of Quetzalcoalt" was built in four separate stages always maintained its circular form, which indicates that God Ehécatl, deity of the wind, was worshiped there.
The Tlaloc Cluster is a group of three structures around a small plaza in the middle of the hill, scholars associate the structure with Tlaloc; on the west side is the Altar of the Skulls or Tzompantli. There are other two rectangular platforms with a single staircase.
The Calmecac Group is a series of buildings around a courtyard. These structures are located near the Tejalpa River. It seams to have been the place where the priests in charge of the education of nobility’s children lived.
Other interesting structures are the typical ballcourt.
North of the city, the temple of God Tolotzin located at the top of Cerro Toloache.

It is located in the town of Calixtlahuaca 9 km north of Toluca and 74 km from Mexico City.
