San José Mogote has been occupied for more than 3,500 years.
Possibly it was the first town that was founded, and was the largest at that time.It dates back to 1,500 B.C. and is believed to be the first stone city in Mesoamerica. El Mogote was one of the most important urban centers in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca before the founding of Monte Albán.
During the height of this center, San José Mogote served as the headwaters of the Etla Valley. The site also had a palace, temples and a ball game. It was abandoned around 400 B.C.
One of the oldest uses of the ceremonial calendar of 260 was found in this site in the Monument 3, along with some vessels with the names "one tiger" and "two J".
