This culture is contemporary to the Olmec civilization.

This city had its heyday around 800 B.C. when there were more than 5,000 inhabitants.

There are traces of occupation since 600 B.C. and remained inhabited until the year 1500 A.D. This settlement is part of the Huasteca culture that flourished in the states of Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas and Veracruz.

The site is remarkable for its pyramids, monoliths, stelae, mural paintings and amazing stone sculptures, especially those of female figures, which reflect the important role of women in this society.

Other characteristic feature of Tamtoc are its circular buildings.

It is located 17 km from the municipality of Tamuín and 45 minutes from Ciudad Valles, San Luis Potosí.
