This site is located in the center of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in the southeast of the state of Campeche.

Esta zona se ubica en el centro de la Reserva de la Biosfera de Calakmul en el sureste del estado deCampeche.

Calakmul was an important political-religious center inhabited for 1500 years and exerted its influence from the Guatemalan Petén to northern Yucatan. This site is compared in importance with Tikal and Palenque.

Its imposing walls and distinctive global layout is unique and it offers monuments exceptionally preserved.

The site is characterized by well-preserved structures. Excavations at Calakmul have revealed stucco friezes and mural paintings in some of the massive temple pyramids and palaces, as well as burials of kings and other members of nobility. Here you can experience a vivid impression of what it was like in the ancient Mayan city.

Must see Buildings

Located in the heart of a biosphere reserve, it has 6,750 structures, among them the highest pyramid in Mexican territory.

Calakmul covers 70 square kilometers and the temples and different structures are scattered in five large complexes organized around The Grand Plaza connected to other sections by sacbés.

Grand Plaza

It is surrounded by several buildings: to the north the Structure VII, to the west Structure VI, to the south Structure II and Structures IV and to the east Structure III. The Structure VIII is in the extreme northeast, and Structure V is the link between the two sectors of the plaza.

Sacbes and Stelae

It is one of the largest cities in the Mayan world where 120 stelae have been found between the structures and pyramids of the site.

Museo de la Naturaleza y Arqueología de Calakmul (Museum of Nature and Archeology)

This impressive settlement is located within the second largest Biosphere Reserve in America and here you can also visit the Museum of Nature and Archeology of Calakmul. This museum offers four areas where topics such as the geology of the area, the natural environment and pre-Hispanic history are narrated. There are somo notorious replicas of friezes and murals. It is located at km 20 of the road through which the archaeological site is reached. Para abordar estos temas el museo cuenta con objetos, gráficas, elementos interactivos y un asombroso patio central con diversas esculturas. Se destacan las réplicas de frisos y murales, así como las muestras de paleontología. Se encuentra en el km 20 de la carretera por la que se llega al sitio arqueológico.

It is located in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, in the area known as the Petén Campechano, past the Conhuás ejido. In the km. 98 of the road that goes from Escárcega to Chetumal.
