ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES IN ETZATLÁN

Etzatlán

Within the municipality, several archaeological remains have been found and explored.

The first settlers of this region were Nahuas with Toltec influence and they were subjugated by the Tarascans who also controlled the regions of Coliman and Tonalán.

Location

Etzatlán is located an hour and a half from the center of the city of Guadalajara.

Archaeological Site of El Arenal

The Arenal Ceremonial Center has an area of shaft tombs, with burials dating from the years 300 to 900 A.D.

The old inhabitants with much ingenuity envisioned an eternal resting place for the bodies after death and thus, with sufficient anticipation, they dug a shot and then a chamber with the capacity to house several bodies. So when someone died he was lowered by the shaft of the grave by depositing the body in the chamber and surrounded by various objects such as: vessels, ornaments, necklaces and offerings. Then the chamber was sealed with a wall of stone and earth, and was reopened when another person died and was deposited in the chamber.

You can visit a tomb, with prior authorization. It has three rooms attached to the tunnel shaft and the shaft has a depth of 18 meters.

There are also three circular buildings of the "Guachimontón" type.

Location

This vestige is located two kilometers northwest of the town of Santa Rosalia.

El Peñol

It also belongs to the "Teuchitlán" tradition and there are some vestiges of circular architecture. There are also remnants of walls and a ball game.

Location

It is located 3 km north of Etzatlan.

Palacio de Ocomo

This site has the largest and best preserved structure in the area. In the surroundings there are also vestiges of terraces, sunken courtyards, platforms and pyramids dating from the Classic Period (450 - 900 AD).

According to the information found, this building was used for administrative purposes.
