The name means “Stepped Cenote” in Mayan.
It comes from the strategic location of the site, in the north is the “Blue Water Cenote”, in the northeast is the “Chanujabab” lagoon and in the northwest is the “Tepancuapan” lagoon.
It is located very close to the border with Guatemala and the Montebello Lagoons, 47 km from Comitan. All the lagoons and the cenote have an important role because of their religious significance.
It had its greatest peak between the years 750 and 900 A.D. in the Late Preclassic to the Early Postclassic period, although the first settlements date back to 50 B.C.
Must see Buildings
It is divided into four architectural groups: The Acropolis or Group A is the most elevated and the entire site can be seen from here. The most important structure is the Acropolis, built on the banks of the Cenote Azul.
The Group B has a large sunken plaza. In group C there is a large ball game and the Great Platform.
And in group D the building 20 known as the Lajas Platform is very peculiar since it was built with large laja stones that can mesure up to 2.6 by 40 meters, and are considered the biggest constructional blocks known in Mesoamerica.
