Its name means "House of Gestures" or "House of the Itzaes".

It is located in the northern region known as the "Chenes". It was one of the most important ceremonial centers of the Mayan Preclassic period (300 BC-900 AD). una de las ciudades más bellas del Mundo Maya. Constituyó uno de los centros ceremoniales más importantes del periodo Preclásico maya (300 a.C.-900 d.C.).

Must see Buildings

The settlement has magnificent architectural groups such as the Great Acropolis or Main Plaza, central platform that supports 5 structures. On the east side of the plaza is the largest concentration of buildings.

The main Castillo defines the Gran Acropolis, is a unique building of the five stories that reaches 40 meters, it was thought to be used by religious leadears. Each stair had intricate glyph carvings. Beside is the Small Acropolis with three buildings located on the top.

Other important structures are: the Temple of the Masks with two small masks on the base of the temple, one representing the Sunrise God and the other the Sunset God; and the Palace, in front of the Gran Acropolis, it was a residential building with four large rooms at the top of the staircase.

Its inhabitants developed an important and complex hydraulic system, building a complex network of canals. These canals were used to transport goods and people and also had defensive purposes.

If you visit this site in the afternoon you will be able to see interesting games of light during the sunset and when the sun sets, it is worth seeing the light and sound show. This is called the, "Edzná, Mirror of the Gods", and it recalls the daily life of the Mayans and their relationship with the gods. The show lasts 20 minutes and takes place on Fridays and Saturdays at 20:00 hrs and in summer and at 19:00 hrs. in winter.
