Colonial Architecture in Mexico

Mexico has one of the most interesting and complex cultural heritages in the world.

The peoples who inhabited their lands before the Spanish conquest developed magnificent civilizations that embraced the sciences and arts and made important contributions to universal knowledge, including of course a magnificent architecture.

With the arrival of the Spanish, classical and Moorish elements were introduced to the buildings, and the construction of large temples and convents began. It was with this blend of indigenous and Arab decorative influences that one of the most beautiful architectural expressions in the world was created: Churrigueresque style, incorporating carved and polychrome sculptures where art is manifested with brilliant colors and exquisite shapes.

This New Spain baroque that emerged in the 16th century and extended until the 18th century is a fantastically extravagant, impressive and daring architecture. Good examples of this architecture can be seen in the Altar of the Kings of the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City, the Rosary Chapel in the Church of Santo Domingo in Puebla, the Church of Santa Prisca in Taxco, the Church of San Francisco Javier in Tepotzotlán and of course in the Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzmán in Oaxaca.

Colonial cities in Mexico not only offer these wonderful temples and convents, but they also provide a special atmosphere with their alleys, squares, gardens and corners full of stories and legends that invite you to know them and travel back in the past.

In this section we talk about each of these buildings that grace the beautiful cities and towns with colonial heritage.
