Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Zapopan

The Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan is one of the richest and oldest architectural gems in Jalisco.

The church was built by Franciscan friars in honor of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception or Virgin of Expectation, now known as the Virgin of Zapopan.

It is one of the main religious centers in the country, and its construction dates back to 1690 and was completed in 1730.

The first towers were demolished in 1889, and the current ones were finished in 1892. They show a rich decoration with foliage and cherub reliefs, as well as fluted pilasters and vases.

Inside, it houses altarpieces that combine a Colonial Doric style with Gothic vaults, and the main altarpiece is in Corinthian style.

The image of the Virgin of Zapopan dates back to the 16th century and was crafted by artisans from Michoacán.

The facade is in Plateresque style and consists of three sections and a top.

In its spacious atrium, there are two sculptures: one of Fray Antonio de Segovia, the person who donated the image of the Virgin in the 16th century, and the other of Pope John Paul II with a child dressed as a charro, representing the typical attire of the state of Jalisco.

Every October 12th, it welcomes thousands of pilgrims and hosts "La Romería," where all the faithful gather to accompany the Virgin of Zapopan back to the sanctuary from the Guadalajara Cathedral. This tradition dates back to the 18th century.
