It was founded about 1259, when three Chichimeca rulers arrived in the area.
It has the best preserved palace in the basin of Mexico and according to the explorations the different periods of occupation have been determined: Late Formative (400-1 B.C.), Early Classic (150-300), Classic (600-800), Postclassic Early (800-1100), Middle Postclassic (1200-1430) and Late Postclassic (1430-1521).

The area is limited to Tecpan or Chimalhuacán Palace, and it is possible that many of the other structures are located under the surrounding areas.
With the conquest, the Spaniards partially destroyed this building and built a small chapel, today there are only few remains.
Chimalhuacan Site Museum
It has a Site Museum with a room divided into 10 modules exploring the Pleistocene and the archaeological zones of the region.
It exhibits a collection of pre-Hispanic ceramic pieces, as well as mammoth bone fragments, a reproduction of the skull of the “Man of Chimalhuacán”, estimated to be 10,500 years old.
