OLD MINING SPLENDOR AMIDST NATURAL WONDERS

It is located two and a half hours from Mexico City and an hour and a half from Toluca, in the Tlalpujahua mountain range, on the border of the states of Mexico and Michoacán.

This is a place full of history, founded in the 18th century, surrounded by beautiful wooded landscapes.

It is one of the towns that exemplify the architectural richness of a village that experienced prosperous times thanks to its gold, silver, and zinc mines in the region known as La Esperanza, El Consuelo, or La Providencia. Its gold mines were considered the second richest in the world, second only to those in Transvaal, Africa.

The growth in mining activity attracted people from all over the world, giving the town a cosmopolitan character, and its buildings show European influence.

Palacio Municipal (City Hall)

This building, constructed in the early 20th century, stands out and has been declared a Historical Monument by the Institute of Anthropology and History. It is an eclectic construction with elements of neoclassical and art nouveau styles, especially in the central nave and peculiar towers.

Inside, you will find the mural "Génesis Minero" (Mining Genesis) by Manuel D. Rugama, which tells the history of the town.

Juárez Theater

Another must-visit place, dating back to the early 20th century, also showing clear French influence in its architecture. It has many decorative elements in Moorish and art nouveau styles, creating an extraordinary combination.

Renowned international artists such as the great Caruso and, in recent years, the State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra have performed at this venue.

Roberto Velasco Gallery

If you are interested in curiosities, you can visit the Roberto Velasco Gallery, located next to the theater, which sells boxes shaped like the towers of the Municipal Palace.

Santa María de Guadalupe Chapel

This mid-19th-century construction has a simple facade, distinguished by its enclosed atrium with beautiful rose bushes. Inside, it houses a Virgin of Guadalupe with gold inlays.

Socavón San Juan

As a silent witness to the mining heritage, there is the San Juan Adit, which has been rehabilitated to showcase the mining world of the past. It has several niches displaying tools and documents, a statue honoring the miner, gondolas, and excavations made by the gambusinos (artisanal miners).

The walk culminates at the Providencia Shaft, which currently houses the Mining Museum. This museum narrates the mining history of El Oro and exhibits valuable documents, photographs, and machinery that speak of the region's mining past. It also offers a geological exhibition, paintings, a mine shaft, a winch, and some beautiful kiosks where you can enjoy the surrounding nature.

Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
