PLACE OF THE SUN

It is a small colonial town surrounded by lush vegetation, which has preserved its provincial and tranquil flavor.

Its name means "place of the sun" and it lives up to its name with its pleasant climate, reflected in the lush vegetation that can be seen in its surroundings.

Tonatico combines natural beauty, historical monuments, and ancient traditions. Perhaps that's why it is not only a Magical Town but also part of the Charming Towns program, which celebrates the revaluation of attributes, the recovery of landscapes, the rescue of history, culture, and Mexican identity. You can enjoy this beautiful corner of the State of Mexico by walking through its picturesque streets, where traditional houses with red tile roofs predominate amidst a green mountain landscape. You can also relax in its thermal waters and venture into its natural wonders, such as the astonishing Grutas de la Estrella (Star Caves) or the incredible Salto de Tzumpantitlán (Tzumpantitlán Waterfall).

Among its celebrations is the Fair in honor of "Our Lady of Tonatico," celebrated from the last Sunday of January to February 2nd every year. Famous throughout the State of Mexico and its surroundings for its miracles, the image of Our Lady of Tonatico is visited by thousands of pilgrims each year, who take the opportunity to enjoy the music, dances, fireworks, and rituals offered as thanks for the favors received from the Virgin.

Tonatico holds a magnificent parade on September 27th every year, with the pretext of Mexico's Independence Day, but the celebration is something unique to the municipality. The procession begins with the escort of the Municipal Council, followed by representatives of some federal and military police contingents. Next, primary, secondary, and high schools from the municipality participate, all dressed in formal uniforms. Other schools from the region that teach Nursing, Beauty, and other technical careers also participate. The beauty queens of Tonatico and several neighboring municipalities, invited to participate, follow, showcasing floats representing their respective regions.

It is located only 4 km (5 minutes) from Ixtapan de la Sal, 68 km (one hour and fifteen minutes) from Toluca, and 118 km (2 hours) from Mexico City.

Enjoy the nearby water parks

In the surrounding area, you can visit Tzumpantitlán Park or Sun Park, where you can be amazed by the Tzumpantitlán Waterfall, also known as "La Cascada," with a 50-meter drop. You can admire this waterfall from a 60-meter-long suspension bridge placed at a height of 70 meters.

The best time to visit is during the summer months, during the rainy season, when the flow increases and offers a spectacle of great beauty. It also has parking, green areas, barbecue pits, three shallow pools, a swimming pool, playgrounds, a soda fountain, restrooms, and two rustic suspension bridges.

Visit the Municipal Spa, a place where tonifying and healing thermal waters emerge due to their significant mineral properties.

Previously, the springs were used not only for bathing but also for salt production, a tradition that has been carried out for over two thousand years and was finally discontinued in 1970.

The spa features five swimming pools, two shallow pools, and a several-meter-high slide surrounded by green areas, picnic tables, barbecue pits, playgrounds, sports courts, and parking for families to enjoy.

Explore extraordinary caves

Visit the Grutas de la Estrella (Star Caves), a natural wonder created by nature, where over time, drops of water containing mineral salts have formed beautiful columns known as stalactites and stalagmites.

To reach the entrance of these caves, you need to descend about 450 steps. You will reach a gallery where the river cascades successively in three waterfalls. Then there is a bridge that leads to a cliff where the cave runs on two levels. Inside, you can admire different formations with whimsical shapes that the locals have given names to, but surely you will find your own interpretations.

If you are an adrenaline enthusiast, you can also explore the underground river El Zapote by rappelling and swimming through some pools from February to June. This tour takes approximately three hours.

Enjoy Nature

Another option to enjoy nature is the Niltze Camp and Park. This place takes care of the environment and offers cultural walks, horseback rides, camping areas, tables with barbecue pits, a swimming pool, and playgrounds.
