PREHISPANIC SANCTUARY AND VIRREYAL CONVENT

This magical place is located 104 km from Mexico City and 69 km from the state capital, Toluca.

It is one of the most beautiful towns in the state. The colonial-style architecture, the cobbled streets that follow the irregularity of the terrain, the orchards with a variety of fruits, as well as the climate, give it a paradisiacal look.

It is characterized by its peaceful and friendly atmosphere, as well as its cobbled streets.

Malinalco is home to several holistic centers that offer healing and relaxing services, incorporating temazcal (sweat lodge), yoga practice, meditation, and massages.

Parroquia del Divino Salvador y el Convento Agustino (Parish of the Divine Savior and the Augustinian Convent)

In the main square is located the Parish of the Divine Savior and the Augustinian Convent from the 16th century. The Parish has impressive dimensions, is in Plateresque style, and resembles medieval constructions with a splendid pilgrim's portal.

The Convent Cloister consists of two levels and houses some original frescoes attributed to the Tlacuilos (painters of the pre-Hispanic era) that depict the regional flora and fauna and have gained international fame.

Barrios de Malinalco (Neighborhoods of Malinalco)

Malinalco is composed of eight neighborhoods, each with a beautiful chapel. These buildings date from the 16th to the 18th centuries, and each one is worth visiting as they each have a story to tell.

San Sebastián dates back to the 16th century, San Guillermo has a beautiful arch at the entrance of the atrium, San Andrés is from the 17th century, San Juan has beautiful images inside, Santa Mónica was built in stages during the 16th and 17th centuries, San Pedro dates back to the 17th century, San Nicolás Tolentino has a beautiful octagonal dome, Jesús María has an arched entrance with original decorations that include two pelicans, Santa María's carved door shows its construction date in the 18th century, and San Martín has a large atrium.

Casa de la Cultura (House of Culture)

It is a beautiful building with an arcade patio that exhibits interesting works by contemporary painters. Its artisan tradition dates back to the pre-Hispanic era, so the House of Culture seeks to maintain this tradition by offering training, workshops, and the sale of all kinds of crafts. On Saturdays, you can observe a group of artisans working on their unique creations.

Dr. Luis Mario Schneider University Museum

The museum displays archaeological collections, as well as various objects that tell the history of the place. It has an interesting ethnographic and botanical exhibition, as well as a temporary exhibition hall and a shop.

Museo Vivo Los Bichos de Malinalco (Living Museum)

It is a very original place that seeks to teach about nature conservation. It is housed in an old mansion and consists of three rooms where you can admire a collection of insects, reptiles, and fish. Outside, there are displays of various plants.

Cuauhtinchán Ceremonial Center

It is an ancient Matlatzinca settlement dating back to the Late Postclassic period. It consists of an impressive monolithic temple ("House of the Eagles") that can be compared to Petra in Jordan or the Giants of Abu Simbel. To access it, you have to climb over 400 steps. It has a site museum

If you want to explore the surroundings, be sure to visit the rock paintings that date back over 3,500 years B.C. and are depicted on caves, canyons, cliffs, and rocks.
