TONATICO

Grutas de la Estrella

It is one of the most spectacular grottos in the state. The entrance to the caves is massive but the paths are narrow and you have to be careful because it very slippery in parts, but there are plenty of railings to hold on to.

You’ll need to hire the services of a tour operator in order to explore the caves illuminated by multicolored lights. These lights cast eerie shadows on the cavern walls.

If you follow where the cave leads, you’ll reach a gallery where stalactites have all kind of shapes like tiger head, lion figure, cake, tree, crocodile, mammoths, eagles, crucifixes, oil lamps, and even Dante’s profile.

Apparently the caves are so rich in minerals that some people come to them and crawl into tight spaces between the rocks to meditate. Your mind will benefit from the meditation and your body for the healing affects of the minerals. Local people say the caves are where darkness is seen and silence is heard.

If you want to explore further, you can walk down 450 steps to an underground river with three cascades. The tour of the underground river entails rappel descents and swimming in a number of natural pools. Those wishing to enjoy this tour can do so from February to June.

Here you can also visit the interactive virtual museum to have a unique experience.

It is located 15 km southeast of Ixtapan de la Sal and an hour and a half drive from Mexico City. This is a great place for a day trip !
