It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Sinaloa.

It was inhabited by the Aztatlan culture, an indigenous nation that extended from southern Jalisco to northern Sinaloa, around 700 A.D.

In various parts of the Chametla many archaeological pieces have been found, such as: funeral urns, kitchen utensils and many clay and stone figures.

In addition, in a nearby place called the "Tinajitas" some rocks with holes have been found, it is belived the holes were made as part of a ritual more 1,000 years ago.
