This area has been inhabited by a wide variety of cultures.
Among these cultures are: the Mazatec, Mixtec, Ixcateca, and Cuicateca.
It is located within the Cuiatlán - Tehuacán Biosphere Reserve, which is considered a World Natural and Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
According to scholars, the first settlers date back more than 12,000 years, when the invention of agriculture evolved and they settled in the Cañada de Cuicatlán. Here is where the first varieties of squash, chili and corn were originally domesticated.

Specifically, the cave was discovered in 1970 and is located in the town of Santa Cruz, at the top of a ravine.
It is a large cave where you can see complex cave paintings, as well as elements that show human presence such as small adobe walls, other stoves and fibers that appear from a maguey.
Other amazing feature in the cave are the paintings, hundreds of handprints painted in red, ocher and white are organize in groups. The paintings cover a surface that goes from the ground to the mouth of the cave.
In addition, there are also negatives of hands of different sizes, blurred with ocher paint. Most of them are negatives of left hands of both sexes.
There are also a couple of red snakes that seem to be in an attitude of attack. The bodies extend to a crack, from where water gushes out in the rainy season.
