It is considered an important Totonac city that flourished between 450 and 1500 A.D. during the Postclassic period.
As happens with many archeological sites, people in the region have nearly forgotten its Totonac name, and in Misantla the place is known as Morelos. A curious fact is this site is mentioned in the Popol Vuh as a mythical place where all types of corn come from.
Must see Buildings
The area includes at least 577 structures, of which only fifty have been excavated and are distributed in various plazas.
Some of the most important structures are: two ball games and the structures called Pyramid "I" which is the highest in the entire complex; Building "D"; La Palma, named after a figure found there that resembles a palm.
Toward the rear, to the east, rises one of the site's most beautiful pyramids, called Building A where remains of stucco are preserved, even with some of its original colors, red and blue. Its northern facade reveals a subterranean passageway that measures 15.2 meters long (about 50 feet) between the entrance and the staircase, which consists of 21 steps leading up to a platform.
