This is an important site because its calendrical inscriptions and its monumental architecture and sculpture.

Its occupation is divided into three periods: Huamelulpan I, from 400 to 100 a. c.; Huamelulpan II, from 100 a. C. to 200 d. C., a time when there was a great demographic expansion, and Huamelulpan III, from 200 to 600 d. C., time in which the population decreases although new structures continue to be built.

Must see Buildings

Because of its dimensions it must have been one of the largest Mesoamerican cities of its time and was one of the main urban centers of the Mixtec culture. The site includes two sets of terraces, arranged in the slope of a hill.

In the first, there are platforms with slope walls, a stairway and an hydraulic system. The second group includes two platforms, formed by rectangular structures with slope walls. In addition to these groups, there are several graves and mounds not yet explored.

In the lower part there is a ballgame and in the group west to the Church, on the southern slope, there are huge platforms that were reinforced with stone blocks that weigh several tons and that have the peculiarity of having calendrical engravings very similar to those found in Monte Albán in the Zapotec period.
