According to scholars, the first occupation of this settlement dates back to the middle Preclassic period, around 600 B.C. This stage of occupation extended into the Middle Late Classic, and the site was abandoned in the Postclassic.
The first settlers were groups from the Gulf of Mexico, although the group that inhabited it has not been determined but there are influences mainly from mixes-zoques and chontales.
