HANDICRAFTS AND AN IMPRESSIVE CONVENT
Tlayacapan is part of the Convent Route, named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and it boasts the oldest Municipal Palace in Mexico, built in the 16th century.
Its name derives from Nahuatl and means "On the tip of the land" or "Place of boundaries or borders." Scholars affirm that its first inhabitants were the Olmecs, as Francisco Plancarte y Navarrete, the second bishop of Cuernavaca, discovered abundant figurines with Olmec features between 1890 and 1910.
It is the birthplace of the "chinelos," an ancient tradition dating back to colonial times, celebrated three days before Ash Wednesday. Dressed up and with their faces covered, the dancers jump and whistle through the streets.
It is located in the state of Morelos, only 51 km (1 hour) from Cuernavaca and 116 km (1.5 hours) from Mexico City.
