Manzanilla lived its time of splendor during the Early Classic period.
The settlement has its origin in the Preclassic horizon, a little before our era. According to scholars, it seems that this site seems to be related with the same culture that built Teotihuacán during the Preclassic Period between 2500 B.C. to 200 AD.
The occupation area covers part of the foothills of the "La Malinche" volcano, where pine and oyamel vegetation was originally abundant.
Must see Buildings
Manzanilla is divided into three main groups: the Cerro de Manzanilla which is related to the Preclassic Period, the Manzanilla Park, these structures belong to the Classic Period and the Hacienda de San Diego Manzanilla, this group was built during the Late Classic and Postclassic Period.
You can visit 14 to 16 pyramids and some other structures. The construction technique was based on boulder rocks or river stones and stucco.
The most important structure is the ball game, it preserves its two slopes, sidewalks and stairways.
