WHAT TO EAT IN CREEL

In your visit to Creel you most try the “caldillo de carne seca” (dry meat and broth).

Other typical dishes are: dried meat prepared with tomatoes, ancho chile and piquín chile, as well as the traditional machaca (dried meat), chili with cheese that is prepared with jalapeño chile, Chihuahua cheese, and the popular burritos.

These dishes can be accompanied by tesgüino, a very common drink in the town that is made with fermented corn. There are also several places that offer rich coffee and chocolate.

This picturesque town offers several options to savor its delicious dishes, almost all of them have that unique character that makes you feel in the mountains.

Chile con Queso (Chile with Cheese) Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 10 to 12 chilaca or california chiles
  • ½ onion
  • ¼ cup of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of cream
  • 500 grams of Chihuahua cheese
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste

Directions:

Toast the chiles on the griddle and store them in a plastic bag and let them rest so that they sweat for a while.

Clean the chiles, remove the seeds and cut into strips.

Slice the onion.

Put a square of butter in a pan, add a spoon of oil. Heat and add the onion, move until it softens.

Add the chilaca, the diced cheese, the milk and the cream.

Season and wait for the cheese to melt.

Serve in a clay pot and accompany it with flour tortillas or tortilla chips.
